SEX PISTOLS Vow To Play Show In Iraq
July 11, 2003British punk band the SEX PISTOLS want to bring their particular brand of anarchy to Iraq, vowing to play a live concert in Baghdad with the message that democracy has its pitfalls.
In an interview posted on MTV.com, PISTOLS' front man John Lydon, who was known as Johnny Rotten during the punk heyday, said the reformed band hoped to set up the concert for sometime early next year.
"I am definite about it," Lydon said.
"The red tape is lining up thick and fast, and the more they put up, the bigger the scissors."
Lydon said the SEX PISTOLS, who famously touted anarchy in the U.K. in the late 1970s, said the Iraqi people should be made to understand the downside of democracy.
"If you are going to offer these people democracy, then offer it to them in their fullest extreme so they fully know what they're walking into," he said.
"Because democracy has a few problems, mate, and the SEX PISTOLS know that, but at least we can shout out about it, and that might be of some use to them."
Before hitting Baghdad, SEX PISTOLS — Lydon, Steve Jones (guitar),Paul Cook (drums) and Glen Matlock (bass),the band's original lineup — will take on the U.S., a place Lydon refers to as "the new Russia" under the Bush Administration, according to Rolling Stone. The tour kicks off August 20 in Boston and wraps up in San Diego on September 7.
